Dance in San Diego
Modern and classical movements weave through the streets of San Diego.
Dance Place San Diego
Twenty-six buildings and 28 acres are devoted to arts and culture at the new NTC Promenade, thanks to the NTC Foundation who's spearheading this creative revival. It's rumored that they're out to create a new cultural gem to rival Balboa Park. So far dance companies are really putting their stamp on the converted former Naval Training Center in Point Loma. Classes are held weekly, and check the companies below for performance dates and locations (that's Malashock Dance's picture).
Editors' Choice: Dance Companies
Explorations in the art of dance lend exotic flair to these San Diego dance companies. As they continue to grow and prosper, their revolutionary works never cease to inspire audiences.
Editors' Choice: Galleries in La Jolla
The tony streets of La Jolla scream "money." From perky boutiques to tempting restaurants, a stroll along Prospect and neighboring downtown streets can cure what ails you. And to make sure your mind experiences some bliss of its own, linger in a few art galleries while you're there.
Editors' Choice: High Art Happy Hour
We're all artists at heart. We start with neon finger paints, move on to the subtleties of crayons and eventually abuse every color of magic marker we can find. The grit it takes to create art doesn't always stick, but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate the sleek designs and sublime expressions of others. Several of San Diego's museums, galleries and theaters cater to art lovers with a social bent. Sometimes art goes down better with a cocktail and a room full of wandering eyes.
Editors' Choice: Live Comedy
Want to laugh? Won't wait for Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey to finally costar in a rom-com set at her one-dimensional best friend's wedding where he's too fat to fit his best man tux and she gets her hand accidentally caught in his zipper and comedy ensues? Get thyself to a live comedy venue and placate thyself, then.
Editors' Choice: Live Jazz
Who doesn't feel a rush when Miles toots through "Kind of Blue" or Sonny Rollins rolls around on his "Tenor Madness" album? But imagine the thrill of experiencing this American original art form live, as it was intended to be.
Editors' Choice: Museums for kids
What do you want to be when you grow up? It's a question that adults ask with wonder and envy, and one that kids will be asked again and again. Give the kids a headstart with regular visits to local museums. Explore an old firehouse, touch a sea creature or ride the rails at one of San Diego's family-friendly museums.
Editors' Choice: Museum stores
The best museum stores understand two things about the average culture lover: 1. You might not be a Rockefeller and 2. You might never endow an artwork or bid on a masterpiece at Christie's, but no one likes going home empty handed. So if you want amazing art on your T-shirts and tchotchkes, or if you're looking for a splashy model ship for that Special Naval Ops someone, you can drop into these stores without even paying the admission fee.
Editors' Choice: Nutcrackers and Messiahs
Tis the season for holiday classics! From a show-stopping "Nutcracker" backed by a live symphony (and spunky junior companies taking on the roles of Sugarplums with aplomb) to Handel's "Hallelujah"-heavy choral classic. Upholding holiday traditions is as easy as loading the family in the car -- just click a production below.
Editors' Choice: San Diego Visual Arts Spots
San Diego's steady stream of visual art exhibits captures the minds of many. Whether you're an arts lover or a culturephobe, these institutions are sure to suck you in.
Editors' Choice: Serial Cinephiles
The cineplex doesn't always have the creme de la creme of flicks. Catch a cult classic, wacky short, underground spoof or cinematic milestone at one of these screenings around town.
Editors' Choice: Theater Week
Drama, comedy and human nature unfold live, on stage every week in San Diego. Great theater is viewed from velvet seats and folding chairs, indoor playhouses and outdoor theatres throughout the county. And the caliber of writers, directors and actors may just surprise you.
