Here's a hot tip for you: Always watch those new mid-to high-end hotels and resorts for really good value-for-dollar dining.
Why? Because the restaurant is not where most hotels make their big money. That comes from room sales and group sales. And what better way to entice new guests and corporate groups into your hotel than by having a terrific restaurant with great food and reasonable prices?
Sure, after a few years the hotel may get sloppy, figuring its reputation has been made, but when any hotel is the new kid on the block, rest assured the management and staff are knocking themselves out to impress and accommodate any and all comers, whether locals or guests from New York.
That's why I suggest you head to Twenty/20 Grill & Wine Bar at the new Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa for breakfast, lunch or dinner. (I've now had all three there.)
The menu is playful (as well it should be, with Legoland right in the hotel's backyard). I don't mean that this is a fast-food venue; far from it. But there is just an undertone of fun to the casual-yet-well-prepared menu offerings.

I'm a little reluctant to post this comment since it's already pretty hard to get a patio reservation for Tapas Thursdays (from 5-8 pm) but it's really outstanding. They were going to only do the tapas until the end of September but we went this week and were told they are continuing it indefinitely. I like that you order as much or as little as you want, get to try a variety of interesting flavors, and the little sampler sized desserts (at $2.50 apiece) were fun. It was nice to leave a restaurant not feeling stuffed, instead, that I ordered and ate only as much food as I wanted. I especially enjoyed the beef, watermelon and cucumber tapa..very flavorful. If you are looking for ginormous sized meals this isn't what you are looking for as tapas are very small, meant to give you only a few bites of anything. Oh, and free valet parking!
report thisThis place is amazing! It is so peaceful to sit on the patio and enjoy a really good lunch. A new favorite!
report thisI recently discovered the Tapas Thursday event put on by Twenty / 20. In all, the food is great and the service is good. The beauty about this Thursday event is you can come completely hungry or semi-hungry (I always show up as the former). The timing between plates was good. Give the chicken tacos a try - quite scrumptious. Our server was knowledgeable of the best foods on the menu. My dinner party ordered quite an array of plates, and all were aesthetically appealing. If you do come, I recommend you show up early or make a reservation to get a table on the patio. The patio views overlooking Carlsbad and the ocean are just amazing.
report thisWow!!! Told by a nieghbor to go to new Sheraton Carlsbad for Tapas Thursdays...what a fantatic experience!!! Chefs of the patio grilling Tapas plates to order, a Flemenco guitarist strolling the crowd and a great staff. Sat next to a beautiful fireplace with a great view of the Pacific. Cooktails were the best in North County by far! Great job Twenty / 20!!!!
report thisI have been to 20/20 3 times now, and my wife has been there 4 times now. Honestly, the best thing there is the valet service. The restaurant is very new, and they are very young in their knowledge of food and wines, yet their prices (they charge 3 times retail for all wines) say they are very knowledgable. Tie that with kids running around the restaurant while you are trying to have an elegant dinner at a premium price, and you should go to the West or the West Bistro instead for the same money. Furthermore, they double charged us one day for 130 bucks (that was drinks and an appetizer for two), and when we called they were determined that no such thing could ever occur and now they are still "researching the issue in accounting". Not only were we double charged, but others we know that were there the same night were as well, 5 people so far, and no one has received a credit back to date due to this extensive research. They haven't even bothered to offer us a discount or a coupon to return, let alone give us the second round of charges back! Go somewhere else!
report thisFour of us went last night and agreed that we wouldn't go back. All of the food was good, but nothing really stood out. The prices were too high for what they served.
The service was also disappointing. It seemed that our waiter really didn't want us to have drinks. I think that we got the only bum waiter in the place because all the others seemed to be doing a pretty good job.
At least half of the tables had young children - I assume it is because it is so close to LegoLand. They seemed to do a good job catering to kids though we didn't have any with us.
The patio will probably be popluar with the happy hour crowd for the office parks in the area. It has nice views and they have an extensive martini and specialty drink menu.
