From a seat on the expansive oceanfront terrace, it seems so obvious: The Hotel Del was meant to have a restaurant with views like this. There's nothing between you and the water except a luxurious sweep of verdant lawn. Take out-of-towners and say you eat here all the time.

Sheerwater is the resort's informal choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner; not as fancy as the Prince of Wales or the Crown Room but much more than a hot dog on the pool deck. Families corral here at lunchtime for sandwiches and salads (there are great kids' menus); friends gather for afternoon margaritas and quesadillas; and everyone shows up for the breakfast buffet with made-to-order omelets.

Specialties on the dinner menu range from barbecued chicken and fish and chips to a ginger-charred ahi salad, grilled flat iron steak and pizzas cooked in the visible wood-fired oven.

Cocktail hour stretches into the evening in the adjoining Babcock & Story Bar, named for the visionaries who built the Del. The convivial spot also has plenty of outdoor seating and a menu of top-shelf cocktails and tapas.

11111 overpriced blah

We visited the Hotel Del and ate lunch at the Sheerwater Restaurant as a treat for my birthday. The service leaves a lot to be desired and the menu is incredibly limited and way overpriced. At the prices listed you would think a trained chef would be preparing the meals, but it is glaringly obvious that a barely trained line cook prepared our dishes. The shrimp atop the ceasar salad was tasteless and my husbands $30 fish and chips was beyond a joke! All in lunch for two with one glass of wine came to $120. While we appreciated the fact that you are paying to be at the Del and enjoy the views it is sadly obvious that the Del's view is simply not to care about the quality of food put out as 99% of the people there are tourists who won't likely be returning anyway.
Avoid at all costs and if you want a great dining experience with views there are a million other choices in San Diego.
