The Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines, formerly the Sheraton Grande Torrey Pines, is a contemporary facility with simple, classic lines.

The lobby, with its enormous glass- and copper-enclosed fireplace, has a modern, cutting-edge feel. A rotating collection of contemporary artworks helps create a space that is classy but not indulgent.

An exception, though, is the Torreyana Grille, which sparkles with linear fountains, an open kitchen framed by copper and azure tiles, and an abundance of modern art. The restaurant is located beneath the lobby and down an impressive split, circular staircase. It serves California cuisine and is a real showpiece for the hotel.

The Belvedere, Hilton's pristine sculptured courtyard, boasts manicured lawns and well-tended flowers. With its ocean views, it has been the backdrop of many weddings. A wide pedestal balcony creates a lovely spot to linger and watch the sunset.

The oval pool is pleasant and functional. There are deck chairs, umbrellas and a few tent cabanas for retreat from the sun. The Hilton serves a large business clientele, and an extensive business center is equipped to serve any last-minute needs. Guests can use a fitness center adjacent to the hotel for an additional fee.

Though large and comfortable, the rooms lack distinction and have a chain-hotel feel. Some of the rooms have terrific views of the 18th fairway of the Torrey Pines Golf Course, home to the PGA's Buick Invitational, and each room faces the ocean. The room patios, which are very large, have tables and umbrellas for lounging.

The only available self-parking is in the hotel garage at $12 per day.
