FOR SIGNONSANDIEGO

Located on the oceanfront near the Belmont Park roller coaster, this tropical-style bar and grill takes you into the eye of the storm: Its specialty drinks are named after famous hurricanes and other meteorological disasters.

By day, the rooftop bar overlooking the Pacific is a nice way to spend an afternoon lounging in the San Diego sunshine -- there's a weekday happy hour 5 p.m. until sunset.

After dark

In the evening, 'Canes becomes a nightclub featuring DJs and live bands that attract everyone from trendy college students to tourists straggling in off the beach. And it's ready to handle upward of 1,000 patrons.

Wanna boogie, bay-bee?

Ominous skies painted on the ceiling are foreboding, but there's little trouble ahead. The only danger you'll really find is on the tiny dance floor that leaves no space between you and Mr. Twinkle-Toes there getting his freak on. For those more inclined to watch the action at a safe distance, there are tables and a few couches.

22222 Boring

'Canes is getting old. They definitely need an upgrade of sorts

33333 Great except for the security guards

After moving to San Diego in 2000, I have attended many live shows at Canes. The current security staff is completely rude. It would be wise for the management of Canes to invest in some professional training for their"bouncers." Other staff members are friendly and the talent is usually worth putting up with the security...
