Turn off of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard onto Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach and the first hole-in-the-wall on the right may surprise you. A shiny new Cuban-style pastry shop – accented in java and papaya tones – has cropped up in this well-worn neighborhood renowned for its head shops and burger joints.
Azucar (the Spanish word for sugar) is an apt handle for this tiny shop, which produces island-inspired sweets and savories. Although Azucar might be more in keeping with urban Hillcrest or University Heights, pastry chef Vivian Hernandez-Jackson chose this slice of Ocean Beach for her enterprise because she wanted a workplace she could walk to and frequent as a patron.
