You won't find silverware on top of the tables here. That’s because Etitrean food, much like the cuisine of its neighbor Ethiopia, revolves around injera — a flat, spongy, crepe-like bread that is reminiscent of sourdough wheat. Order food for two people and out comes one giant platter enough for four with all entrees heaped in little islands on the vast injera. Your meal's starch will also serve as plate and fork. Food here is meant to be shared and eaten by scooping it up with torn pieces of injera by hand. Your right hand, if you want to be traditionally hygienic about it.
The menu is divided mainly into vegetarian and beef and lamb dishes, all eaten in the same manner and all sautéed or stewed with a variety of their earthy, traditional spices: chili pepper, paprika, cumin and coriander. If you feel those tiny portions of steak tartare slivered onto crackers is never enough, you can order full bowls of beef dishes raw. Fans of Indian samosas will most like enjoy their version of the appetizer — sambussas — but careful on filling up too quickly. It's possible to spend $25 on dinner for two and still bring back leftovers for a full repeat the next day.
Two breakfast items with crushed fava beans or eggs are available in the morning, along with an interesting spaghetti option on weekends. For those worried about the trek from car to front door in the questionable neighborhood, Asmara offers its own parking lot in the back. Don't miss the selection of Eritrean and Ethiopian beer, or the East African news channel playing silently over the bar. We hear the honey wine is pretty good, too.
