Do a quick search on the Internet for "DNA-1," you'll get various Web sites for the high-end power amplifier retailing at $1995 and wonder pills: "The most effective natural health capsule supplement for energy gain, weight loss and life extension." Standing at a tall 6'6", San Diego's DNA-1 has both bass for your face and life-affirming, energy-infused rhymes.
The album
DNA-1's 2003 debut album "It Payz 2B Humble" (Whiskey Records) pays homage to early hip-hop pioneers like Kool Herc and -- of course -- Run DMC. DNA-1, a.k.a. Senyo Amoaku, spent time in hip-hop crew Natural Facts before going solo with "It Pays 2B Humble." Amoaku also serves as the hip-hop editor for San Diego's No Cover magazine. Guests on the album include Scales from Nappy Roots and Ahmad from 4th Avenue Jones. DJ Demon from the Icons mixed the recording. Not since the Icons burst on the local hip-hop scene a few years ago has a San Diego product made so many waves.
The quote
You think you're raw, you can't get down like this
With all that equipment, you can't sound like this
What you want? Everythang
Introducing the way it is
-- "Everythang," DNA-1
The parties
DJ Demon (The Icons), Brooks, Kendra and Nividah will be on hand to help out on the San Marcos CD release party. DNA-1 will also play a benefit for the Salvation Army at E Street Alley on Nov. 11, with special guests Nappy Roots. Come out for both shows and support local hip-hop.
