Witness one of the oldest marathon traditions on the West Coast as the Carlsbad San Diego Marathon and Half Marathon races through Carlsbad again this January.
All events start at Plaza Camino Real in Carlsbad. Carlsbad is 40 minutes north of the San Diego Airport and one and a half hours south of Los Angeles. Take Highway 78 East from Interstate 5 to the El Camino Real exit. Plaza Camino Real is on the right.
The history
The annual San Diego Marathon is the second-oldest marathon on the West Coast. The first marathon held in San Diego was run from Oceanside to Mission Bay. For many years, the race was held annually in Mission Bay. In Motion Inc. was hired to produce the marathon in 1985. In 1990, the company took over ownership of the race and moved the marathon to North County.
