Considering how many gifted musicians live in San Diego County and Baja, it's surprising and disappointing that there have been so few cross-border collaborations. Yet, even if such pairings were common, the duo of guitarist Miguel De Hoyos and violinist Alex DePue stands out as an uncommonly good one.
Monterrey native De Hoyos and Ohio native DePue met last year when DePue asked if he could sit in during De Hoyos' regular gig at a Rosarito Beach nightspot. De Hoyos was understandably dubious: “Many people ask to sit in with me, but most of them are not very good. Alex was different.”
A classically trained violinist and a national fiddle champion, DePue has toured as a member of the bands of both rock guitar hero Steve Vai and country star Chris Cagle. Also classically trained, De Hoyos has played at various festivals and at Las Vegas' Desert Inn Resort.
The two, who perform tonight at Lestat's in Normal Heights, recently released their impressive debut album, “Underground Whispers.” It features several genre-leaping originals, winning versions of the jazz standard “Autumn Leaves” and the Brazilian classic “Black Orpheus,” and stunning reinventions of favorites by Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Kansas and Fleetwood Mac.
What results is a heady mix of virtuosity and sophistication that is even more impressive live, as I recently discovered when DePue and De Hoyos performed on “Fill in the Blank,” my weekly Monday interview show on SignOnRadio.com.
Since Lestat's is one of the smallest venues in town, arrive early tonight if you want a seat.

I have to admit I must have seen these guys at least 20 times both in Mexico and in USA and they are mesmerizing. I have never seen a violinist/fiddle player more adept and entertaining than Alex DePue and Miguel De Hoyos is a master of of the classical and flamenco guitar. Both are stellar performers and together they are tight. Well worth the experience.
Have almost worn out "Underground Whispers" and can't wait for your new CD to come out-Spring 2009?
